Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) Funding: Improving Mental and Behavioral Health

​PCORI provides funding for patient-centered comparative clinical effectiveness research projects that focus on improving mental and behavioral health. Studies should compare system, community, and individual level interventions that improve mental and behavioral health conditions​.

The Rural Health Care Services Outreach Program​​

​ The application is open for the program’s 4-year period of performance (May 1, 2025-April 30, 2029).  HRSA will make up to 50 awards to support rural communities to expand the delivery of health care services. These awards include:

  • An estimated 40 awards, each up to $250,000 per year, under the program’s regular track to support healthcare needs identified by the rural community applicant;

  • Up to 10 awards, each up to $300,000 per year, under the program’s special track to address the underlying factors that drive rural health disparities related to heart disease, cancer, unintentional injury/substance use, chronic lower respiratory disease, stroke, and maternal health.

​The American Nurses Association and SAMHSA offer fellowships to help ethnic and racial minority students attain masters or doctoral degrees in nursing with certification in mental health and substance use. Fellows are required to commit to a minimum of 2 years of service in mental health and/or substance use after graduation.

Maryland Community Health Resources Commission Issues Annual Request for Applications (RFA)​

A​ a total of $7 million in new grant funding is available istatewide in Maryland to support projects in the following four areas: (1) diabetes and chronic disease; (2) maternal and child health; (3) behavioral health, including mental health and the ongoing impact of the opioid crisis; and (4) oral health care, in support of the state’s Medicaid Dental Benefit.  In this year’s RFA, the Maryland Community Health Resources Commission(CHRC) is providing added emphasis for applications that serve areas identified under the Engaging Neighborhoods, Organizations, Unions, Governments and Households (ENOUGH) Initiative.

State Rural Transit Assistance Programs (RTAP)​

​The Rural Transit Assistance Program (RTAP) provides funding for state level programs that offer training and technical assistance to improve mobility for Americans living in communities with populations less than 50,000. State RTAP funds are often used to provide training for rural and tribal transit agency personnel and to fund scholarships to attend transit-related conferences and training.
Medications for Opioid Use Disorder (MOUD) Training and Mentoring​​

​​This program provides free training and mentoring services for eligible healthcare providers to effectively use buprenorphine and other medications to treat opioid use disorder (OUD) in high-need communities. Completion of the training will count toward meeting MATE Act training requirements for practitioners registering for or renewing a DEA license.

Dental Trade Alliance (DTA) Foundation Pilot Project Grants​​

​​Academy of General Dentistry Foundation Grant Program​

​​The Academy of General Dentistry Foundation provides grant support for nonprofit community-based outreach programs that provide free oral cancer screenings and education to the public, especially underserved communities that lack access to oral healthcare due to geographic and/or economic hardship.
​​Certified Professional by the American Heart Association - Telehealth (CPAHA) program​​

​The American Heart Association is offering a certification program for healthcare professionals interested in demonstrating a commitment to telehealth. The certification is designed to standardize training for healthcare providers in telehealth care delivery, increase skills and competencies in telehealth care delivery, and help to improve patient outcomes through the integration of telehealth.
Rural Access to Anesthesia Care Scholarship

​The Rural Access to Anesthesia Care Scholarship provides stipend scholarships for medical students to complete a rural rotation designed to teach future physicians about anesthesia in rural areas. Applicants will work with a mentor at a designated rural site.
Applicants must be third or fourth year medical students in an approved U.S. program and a medical student member of the American Society of Anethesiologists (ASA).​
Health Center Facility Loan Guarantee Program
​on going
​​The HRSA Health Center Facility Loan Guarantee Program facilitates access to capital funding and reduces financing costs for health centers by guaranteeing up to 80% of financing needed to support capital infrastructure projects. After approving a loan guarantee, HRSA monitors the loan repayment status and assesses the operational/financial viability of the health center during the life of the loan.

Funding may be used for the construction, expansion, alteration, renovation, and modernization of health center medical facilities.​

Hearst Foundations Health Grants

​​The Hearst Foundations assist leading regional hospitals, medical centers and specialized medical institutions providing access to healthcare for high-need populations. In response to the shortage of healthcare professionals necessary to meet the country’s evolving healthcare demands, the Foundations also fund programs designed to enhance skills and increase the number of practitioners and educators across roles in healthcare.
