Health Equity
PHPA performs the
10 essential public health services that work to enable optimal health for all and increase health equity.
Health equity is the state in which everyone has a fair and just opportunity to attain their highest level of health.
PHPA is engaged in the
Root Causes of Health Initiative and other bureau-level initiatives to ensure our programs serve and help all Marylanders equitably. We are focused on improving services for groups of people who have been prevented from living healthy lives.
Five Bureaus
The Cancer and Chronic Disease Bureau (CCDB) reduces the burden of cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, tobacco use, and poor oral health through public health initiatives and community partnerships.
Maternal and Child Health Bureau
The Maternal and Child Health Bureau (MCHB) connects families to services and information to support a lifetime of health. MCHB centers the reproductive justice framework, which includes the right to have a child, the right not to have a child, and the right to parent children in safe and sustainable communities.
Environmental Health Bureau
The Environmental Health Bureau (EHB) works to ensure that all Marylanders have access to clean, healthy, and safe environments in their home, communities, and across Maryland. EHB works towards environmental justice through its programs and services, including promoting healthy homes and preventing injuries.
Infectious Disease Epidemiology and Outbreak Response Bureau
The Infectious Disease Epidemiology & Outbreak Response Bureau (IDEORB) prevents infectious diseases by providing surveillance, case and outbreak investigation, and response to a range of infections. IDEORB focuses on respiratory viruses, foodborne and enteric infections, tick-borne and mosquito-borne infections, vaccine-preventable diseases, tuberculosis, healthcare-associated and antibiotic-resistant infections, and high-consequence infections.
The Infectious Disease Prevention & Health Services Bureau (IDPHSB) is Maryland's response to sexually transmitted infections, including but not limited to HIV and viral hepatitis. IDPHSB works with local health departments and community organizations to meet the sexual health needs of all Marylanders.
