For Providers

What is an Immunization Information System (IIS)?

ImmuNet is Maryland's confidential and secure Immunization Information System (IIS). It is a statewide computerized database that collects and maintains vaccination records for children and adults.

Using an IIS like ImmuNet helps improve public health by:

  • Supporting cost-effective and efficient disease prevention.
  • Help identify and reach under-immunized populations.
  • Improving vaccination coverage across the state.

Why It Matters:

According to national estimates, manually retrieving vaccination records can cost around $14.50 per child, while maintaining a child's record in an IIS costs approximately $3.91 - a significant cost-saving for providers and the public health system. This highlights the cost-effectiveness of using ImmuNet and similar systems for vaccination record management.

Why ImmuNet is Essential for Providers

  • Physicians can overestimate how many of their patients are fully vaccinated, which can lead to gaps in immunization coverage and missed opportunities for preventive care.
  • Parents are often unaware of their child’s immunization status.
  • Inaccurate or missing records can lead to over-vaccination, which contributes to millions in unnecessary costs nationwide. ImmuNet helps reduce waste and improve patient safety in Maryland by preventing this issue.
  • In certain regions or among smaller practices, immunization reminder systems may still be lacking, which can hinder timely vaccination delivery.
  • ImmuNet allows for easy identification of at-risk or under-immunized populations.

Provider Benefits

ImmuNet offers several advantages for healthcare providers:
  • Save staff time retrieving or replacing records.
  • Improve care delivery with tools like printable vaccination reminders.
  • Access consolidated vaccination histories, even from multiple providers.
  • Manage vaccines efficiently, avoiding waste and unnecessary doses.
  • Meet reporting and quality requirements more easily.
  • Electronically submit vaccination data and avoid manual data entry.
Key Takeaway

ImmuNet streamlines vaccination management, improves patient care, and helps meet public health goals - saving time, money and lives.
