History

Maryland’s Clean Indoor Air Act of 2007 was signed into law on May 17, 2007, and amended in 2024.  The purpose of the Act is to preserve and improve the health, comfort, and environment of the people of Maryland by limiting exposure to environmental smoke.  Most recently, the Act was amended during the 2024 legislative session to include vaping (the use of electronic smoking devices). The Act now prohibits smoking and vaping of all tobacco, cannabis, or hemp-derived products in indoor areas open to the public except in limited circumstances. The Act specifically prohibits smoking and vaping in:

• Public meeting places 

• Public vehicles

• Indoor places of employment

Regulatory authority:  

• Department of Health and local health departments (for public areas) 

• Department of Labor/Maryland Occupational Safety and Health (for workplaces, especially those not generally open to the public) ​
