Dispenser Updates

Naloxone Medication Data

In the 2022 Maryland Legislative Session, Chapter 224 Public Health – Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMP) – Naloxone Medication Data was passed. This law requires dispensers who currently report controlled dangerous substance (CDS) dispenses to also begin reporting naloxone dispenses to the PDMP. While the bill set an initial start date of October 1, 2022, regulations guiding this change were promulgated in May 2023. The PDMP Advisory Board granted dispensers an implementation period through July 10, 2023 to operationalize the new naloxone reporting requirement.

If a prescriber writes a prescription for naloxone but does not have a DEA number, the dispenser should provide the prescriber's National Provider Identifier (NPI) number. Please note these naloxone dispenses will not be viewable in the PDMP; instead, the data will only be used in aggregate for public health surveillance and planning. For further details, please refer to the updated PDMP RxGov Data Submitter User Guide.
