Maryland Department of Health releases June Medicaid renewal data and pursues additional strategies to help eligible individuals continue to receive their Medicaid benefits

Baltimore, MD — The Maryland Department of Health today announced the release of new data from the second month of Medicaid renewals currently posted on the Department’s website. This data will be updated each month on the Department’s website to maintain transparency about Medicaid renewals.

While renewals were paused during the Public Health Emergency, federal law now requires states to begin verifying eligibility information over the course of the next year. To assist with Medicaid unwinding efforts and help ensure eligible individuals continue to receive Medicaid benefits, the department has implemented new strategies to support keeping people enrolled. For the month of June, Maryland Medicaid processed 139,051 renewals. Of these 139,051 renewals:

98,630 (70.9%) were determined eligible to have their coverage extended. Of this number, 9,132 participants were determined eligible due to active enrollment in SNAP.
17,075 (12.3%) were disenrolled for procedural reasons, such as not updating eligibility information.
11,619 (8.4%) were determined to be not eligible based on information provided and were disenrolled
Of the 11,619 that were determined to be not eligible, 11,256 were referred to sign up for low cost coverage through a qualified health plan at Maryland Health Connection.

To ensure eligible individuals continue to receive their Medicaid benefits, Maryland Department of Health has successfully obtained approval for a number of strategies, known as waivers and disaster plans in partnership with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). These strategies are designed to support states to protect eligible Medicaid participants to maintain coverage by requesting authority to implement by approval with CMS. To date, Maryland has received approval for 13 waivers and/or disaster plan flexibilities with 2 others pending approval that are currently listed on the CMS waivers and flexibilities webpage.

“We continue to encourage Maryland Medicaid beneficiaries to check in and make sure that their information is up to date to receive important updates about renewal,” said Secretary of Health Dr. Laura Herrera Scott.

“The Maryland Department of Health's proactive approach in obtaining waivers has been crucial in ensuring the continuation of Medicaid benefits for individuals,” said Deputy Secretary of Health Care Financing and Medicaid Director Ryan Moran. “By implementing new plans and actions, we strive to make the redetermination process as accessible and efficient as possible."

The Department will continue to monitor data and trends to inform Medicaid renewal outreach efforts into the fall.
