The Water Microbiology Laboratory performs bacteriological analyses on water samples submitted by MD state agencies and/or Federal partners from a variety of aquatic sources. Ranging from drinking water to marine beach samples, the Water Lab examines for the presence of indicator organisms and pathogenic bacteria. The laboratory analyzes water samples derived from freshwaters, potable waters (drinking water), marine waters, swimming pool or other recreational waters, waste water, bottle water and other non-potable water.
Public water system reports are submitted to the Maryland Department of Environment and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Private well sample reports are mailed to the submitting local health department. As an EPA State Primacy Water Laboratory, the Water Microbiology Laboratory Water Supply is the enforcement authority responsible for ensuring that public water systems comply with the Safe Drinking Water Act. The Maryland Department of Health, Laboratories Administration, Division of Environmental Sciences-Water Microbiology Laboratory must perform EPA-approved and ISO-17025;2005 methodologies.
