Chlamydia Testing Technology Change effective February 2, 2009:

The DHMH Laboratories Administration upgraded the technology it uses for Chlamydia screening from ELISA antigen capture assay to Nucleic Acid Amplification (NAA) based testing, which has become the accepted standard of laboratory practice.

The ELISA based Chlamydia trachomatis antigen detection is no longer available effective February 2, 2009, but was replaced by the Chlamydia trachomatis NAAT. An overview is provided on the Chlamydia Testing Technology Change handout.

The Chlamydia trachomatis NAAT and Chlamydia trachomatis/GC NAAT are restricted tests, which requires pre-approval prior to submission of specimens.

The acceptable specimens are urine, endocervical/cervical swab and male urethral swab specimens. The new specimen collection kits can be obtained from the DHMH Laboratories Administration, Specimen Mailing Assemblies (Outfit Room) by completing the Request Form and faxing to (410)333-5019, and also contacting your local health department.

The specimen collection and submission guidelines are as follows:

·         Swab Collection Protocol

·         Specimen Submission Form

Effective February 2, 2009 governmental entities that are not covered by the Chlamydia trachomatis Testing Allocation System 2009 (Stickers), but were pre-approved to submit specimens for testing must contact the Fiscal Officer, Mr. Ken Keys at keysk@dhmh.state.md.us as soon as possible.
