Maryland Electronic Death Registration System

What is MD-EDRS?

MD-EDRS is a web-based application that Medical Certifiers and Funeral Directors will use to report deaths electronically to the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. MD-EDRS will assist users with data entry through automatic fill-in of repetitious data, drop-down pick lists and auto-population of selected fields. There are also built-in help screens and prompts to assist data providers with proper completion of certificates. This will reduce the likelihood of errors on the death certificate, and improve turnaround time for providing death certificates to family members who need certificates quickly for benefit resolution. The availability of the MD-EDRS will also be an enormous benefit for public health purposes since fact-of-death and cause of death information will be available much more quickly than is possible with a paper-based death registration system. In addition, the system will assist in fraud prevention involving death records.

Accessing MD-EDRS

Only authorized users will be permitted to access MD-EDRS. Your organization (funeral establishment/hospital/nursing home/hospice, etc.) will determine who is an authorized user. Information on accessing the system was sent in November 2014 to all licensed funeral establishments in Maryland. Medical Certifiers will be contacted through the organization with whom they are affiliated to arrange access to MD-EDRS shortly before the organization is set to participate in MD-EDRS.
