A red bow as part of the Red Ribbon Campaign Logo

October 23rd - October 31st 2016

Please join Dr. Ciotola, Queen Anne’s County Department of Health’s Health Officer along with the Queen Anne’s County Department of Health’s Cigarette Restitution Fund Program, Drug and Alcohol Prevention Services and Queen Anne’s County Wellness Coalition in celebrating Red Ribbon Week October 23rd -31st.

Red Ribbon Week is about promoting healthy, drug-free lifestyles and encouraging youth to be drug-free and marking the progress we’ve made. An alarming number of teenagers today will use alcohol or marijuana before leaving high school. This campaign provides communities with a forum to bring together parents, schools and businesses as we look for new and innovative ways to keep youth drug free.

Local businesses, churches, schools, state, county, and government agencies are encouraged to promote the nationwide celebration during the week of October 23rd-31st. Red Ribbon information will be shared with citizens throughout the county to promote Red Ribbon Week.

Churches are asked to include a drug free message in their sermons and mention Red Ribbon Week in their bulletins.

Character Counts Coaches are encouraged to implement Red Ribbon Week activities in their lesson plans for that week.

The first Red Ribbon Celebration was organized in 1986 by a grassroots organization of parents concerned about the destruction caused by alcohol and drug abuse. The red ribbon was adopted as a symbol of the movement in honor of Enrique “Kiki” Camarena, an agent with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration who was kidnapped, tortured and killed while investigating drug traffickers. The campaign has reached millions of children and has been recognized by the U.S. Congress.

Red Ribbon Week offers an opportunity to be visible and vocal in our desire for a drug-free community. Research shows that children are less likely to use tobacco, alcohol and other drugs when parents and other role models are clear and consistent in their opposition to substance use and abuse.
