  • There is no vaccine to prevent Zika and no specific treatment.
  • If you plant to travel to a country where Zika is currently circulating, take precautions. Affected countries
  • About 1 person in 5 infected with Zika virus will develop symptoms.
  • Symptoms are generally mild, last 2 - 7 days and include: fever, rash, joint pain and red or pink eyes
  • Zika can be detected in your blood during the 1st week of infection and it is during this time that an Aedes species mosquito can bite you then spread the virus to someone else
  • If you are pregnant or planning a family it is especially important to heed the Zika precautions during this time.
  • The Zika virus is present in semen longer than in blood and can be spread through sexual contact.
  • Once a person has been infected, he or she is likely to be protected from future infections.
