    Maternal and Child Health Bureau

Healthy pregnancies, healthy children, healthy families, healthier communities

Communities are strengthened when all birthing people and their families have the same chance for a healthy life, regardless of where they live. Maryland Department of Health Maternal and Child Health programs and services connect birthing people and families to services and information to support a lifetime of health and wellbeing. Maternal and child health programs span the lifespan from pregnancy and birth support to infancy, childhood, adolescence, and preconception care.

    Mission

The Maternal and Child Health Bureau (MCHB) is part of the Maryland Department of Health Public Health Services and the Prevention and Health Promotion Administration. MCHB’s mission is to reduce health inequities and improve the health and wellbeing of all individuals, families, and communities in Maryland.

    Vision

All individuals and families are valued, safe, and informed, with equitable access to resources and services

Programs within the Maternal and Child Health Bureau (MCHB) are integrated to assure a holistic and coordinated life span approach to enhance the health of Marylanders. MCHB uses the following strategies to carry out our mission:

    • Build strong partnerships at the local, state, and national levels to coordinate systems of care and improve access to and delivery of health services
    • Fund and administer programs and initiatives to address disparities and improve maternal, and child health outcomes
    • Empower and educate individuals of reproductive age so they may achieve their reproductive health goals and maintain optimal health
    • Collect, analyze, and monitor data to make informed decisions about public health interventions and priorities

MCHB is composed of four offices, including the Office of Family and Community Health Services, Office of Quality Initiatives, Women Infants and Children (WIC) and the Office of Genetics and People with Special Health Care Needs.

The Maternal and Child Health Bureau also collaborates and coordinates activities with other State agencies on health issues that affect women and children. These issues include immunizations, injury prevention, mental health care, Medical Assistance, oral health care, substance abuse, and smoking cessation.
