Center for Cancer Prevention and Control
Mission
The mission of the Center for Cancer Prevention and Control (CCPC) is to reduce the burden of cancer in Maryland by:
- Providing guidance, support and funding for effective cancer programs;
- Fostering collaboration among partners; and
- Evaluating outcomes through data collection and analysis.
Cancer Statistics
Did you know?
- Approximately one out of every two American men and one out of every three American women will develop cancer at some point during their lifetime.
- Many cancers could be prevented. In 2015, almost 171,000 of the estimated 589,430 cancer deaths in the US will be caused by tobacco smoking.
- The risk for cancer increases with age; 78% of all cancer diagnoses are in people 55 years of age or older.
- It is estimated that 30,050 new cancer cases will be diagnosed in Marylanders in the year 2015.
- Cancer mortality rates in Maryland are steadily decreasing; Maryland had the 26th highest cancer mortality rate in the United States for the period 2007-2011.
