In August of 2008, Secretary Colmers established the Office of Diversity and Inclusion within the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene and charged it with fulfilling two specific objectives:

  • to promote a workforce that reflects the diversity of the constituents that DHMH serves, and
  • to encourage and foster greater minority business participation in DHMH’s contracting.

The establishment of the Office of Diversity and Inclusion reflects a commitment that the State of Maryland continues to make to the on-going improvement in the performance and accountability of its workforce. The creation of this Office affirms the Department’s public health direction and mandate: to be responsive to the changing demographic realities of the populations that it serves; populations that are increasingly more diverse in terms of race, nationality, age, sexual orientation, language and culture; and to provide services that are effective, relevant, and both linguistically and culturally appropriate. It also serves to acknowledge DHMH’s awareness of the substantial business opportunities that exist for stimulating an economy that promotes and fosters long-term, sustainable growth throughout the state.
