State to expand services for developmentally disabled at Holly Center
State officials meet with local officials, community to announce plans
Baltimore, MD (May 8, 2017) – The Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene leadership today met with local officials and community stakeholders to announce plans to expand the services offered at Holly Center, a state-operated, 24-hour residential training facility for individuals with developmental disabilities located in Wicomico County. Among the plans discussed included the reorganization of cottage space to broaden outreach to the community. Currently, a variety of services, including vocational, educational, medical, and recreational activities, are offered at the facility.
“The Holly Center and the services it provides is an important to the families of this community,” said Health and Mental Hygiene Secretary Dennis R. Schrader. “By expanding services offered on campus, we will work towards our goal modernizing operations and improving residential quality for both current and futures residents.”
Options for the reorganization of Holly Center include housing the Wicomico County Health Department in two cottages, consolidating existing residents into another cottage, and creating a Residential Treatment Center in other space, as well as a place for collaboration with the Maryland Department of Human Resources. Further space could be used for a new Behavioral Health and Developmentally Disabled Unit for patients transitioning from a mental health facility. Another priority would expand respite – support through relief for caregiving family members – in other available space.
“Our department is committed to continue working with the community to make the Holly Center’s campus an exceptional hub for behavioral healthcare delivery,” said Developmental Disabilities Administration Deputy Secretary Bernard Simons. “We appreciate the level of engagement with all stakeholders and look forward to continued partnership as we move forward.”
