The Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DHMH) has tracked an alarming increase in overdose deaths, admissions to substance abuse treatment programs and presentations at hospital emergency departments related to prescription controlled dangerous substances.  In order to address this concern the Controlled Dangerous Substance Integration Unit (CDSIU) was created to coordinate numerous administrative units within DHMH that have regulatory authority over the manufacturing, distribution, prescribing or dispensing of controlled dangerous substances.  Through intra-departmental data sharing and analysis, the CDSIU aims to prevent and detect prescription drug abuse by employing evidence-based prevention, intervention and enforcement strategies.  This initiative will also strengthen the department’s ability to coordinate with external authorities to reduce the public health threat posed by prescription controlled dangerous substance abuse and diversion.
